What I like most about the Old Testament is its art and endless hidden treasures of Knowledge. I was filled with excitement every time I cracked a code. Therefore, I have read/heard it and more than 100x (not exaggerating either) within a 3.5 year period.
I’m like one of those geeks in the basement (on movies) that acquires much. Knowledge and bores other people trying to explain what they have found. Let me try it out on you. (smile)
The OT gives a consecutive recount of earth from the beginning up until the captivity of Judah into Babylon (which was the 2nd captivity). The first captivity was the house of Israel. The story follows consecutively all the way through to 2 Kings.
After reading through 2 Kings, it is best to jump into the books of the prophets. This is because the prophets were prophesying throughout the reign of the kings. I have also organized most of the prophetic books chronologically mostly according to what king was reigning at the time of the prophesy of that prophet. Also some of the prophetic books coincide with the writings.
I like to elaborate on why I have ordered each book and have read the bible to many people explaining this order. (That’s partly how I have read/heard it more than 100 times within 3.5 years)
Here is my recommended order to read the prophets and writings:
Job (occurred during the era that Joseph governed Egypt)
Psalms (read concurrently with 2 Samuel)
Proverbs (concurrently when beginning 1 Kings)
Ecclesiastes (concurrently with 1 Kings)
Song of Solomon (concurrently with 1Kings)
Amos
Hosea
Micah
Isaiah
Nahum
Jonah
Zephaniah
Habakkuk
Joel
Jeremiah
Lamentations
Obadiah
Daniel
Esther
Haggai
Zechariah
Ezra
Nehemiah
Ezekiel
Malachi
1 Chronicles
2 Chronicles (Gives a quick recap before beginning the New Testament)
The Old Testament is designed so that much of the knowledge and story line is hidden in the requirement to read it repeatedly. After learning the stories by heart, one can then see where the puzzle pieces of the stories go.
There may be others that have uncovered a lot of the same info. I’m not seeking to set myself above anyone else’s studies. My excitement is Pure. The reason I have been able to recognize someone else’s diligence in study is because of My own. It takes one to know One. I’d like to be sharing the same excitement about Knowledge with as many that want to have it and then some.
Ok back to Daniel… First of all, the book of Daniel is not written in chronological order. One can see this by noting the timing of the reign of each king mentioned in each of the 12 chapters. The chronological chapter order of the book of Daniel is as follows: 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 8, 5, 10, 9, 11, 12,6.
Though we are discussing the order of the books, I would like to share with you that I can also clearly see where the chapters of each book intertwine one with another. You might see how this works with the Daniel era as well.
The record of Daniel’s prophecy is from the reign of Nebuchadnezzar to the reign of Darius the son of Ahasuerus (Esther’s Husband). The prophets Haggai and Zachariah also prophesied during the reign of Darius. The exact year and timing of this king’s reign is marked all throughout their prophecies.
Now, turn your attention to the books of Ezra and Nehemiah and you will see the story of the prophecies of Haggai and Zachariah unfold.
To verify this, just look for the timing of the reign of the kings, which is often found in the first verse of many of the prophetic chapters. The books that relate to the Daniel era are Esther, Daniel, Haggai, Zechariah, Ezra, and Nehemiah.
